Destination: Cambodia

Cambodia and The Temples of Angkor

For decades the splendor of Cambodia and the temples of Angkor were off limits to travelers, yet since 1990 the world can now share in the magic of this region, immensely rich in history, culture and heritage. A true window into the past, it is now become a top “must-see” destination for travelers from all over the world, on par with Egypt’s Pyramids and India’s Taj Mahal. Prepare yourself to be swept away on wave of emotions, from the shock of a recent genocide at the hands of the Khmer Rouge, to the incredible grandeur of the ancient temples entwined in exotic jungles, and the undeniable feeling of hope in the air as this fascinating country rebuilds itself, taking a seat among one of the worlds most enchanting destinations.

Most who visit this remarkable country come in search of the inspiring temple complex considered one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia-- a true wonder of the world and declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located outside of the town of Siem Reap, stretching over some 400 sq. km, Angkor contains the magnificent remains of the Khmer Empire, dating back to the 9th to 15th centuries. In vastly ranging states of preservation, some stand splendidly proud seemingly untouched by history while others are leveled, reduced to heaps of stones with mother nature’s massive roots vying for power. Visitors from all over the world are said to experience something incredibly powerful, something otherworldly whilst in the temples’ midst.

While the region offers staggering beauty in some many forms, Cambodia remains one of poorest countries in the world with shortages of clean water, and high rates of illiteracy and poor health services. The results of land mines and an illegal sex trade are also elements that continue to challenge the communities that surround one of the most majestic sites known to man. You will have the opportunity to assist in the rebuilding process as you visit the outreach projects focused on achieving self-sustainability. Couple your exploration with genuine engagement. Feel the power of giving back…
