Travel Matters
Donate books and supplies in person while traveling in Costa Rica
While you visit Costa Rica, we facilitate getting you get off the typical tourist track to learn about important projects at work in communities. These side trips are th eones that end up being the most memorable parts of a vacation because they involve real, authrntic exchanges with local communities. Spend a few hours or an afternoon (or more!) personally donating books, school supplies, meeting with school children or the local women’s association. The Sarapiqui Conservation and Learning Center has a variety of ways you can donate in person while visiting this beautiful country.
Donate School Materials
Who will benefit directly: Children of underprivileged families in grades 1 through 6, our goal is to provide for 100 children in our target area.
What: School materials for the entire school year for one student, which include 5 notebooks, pencils and sharper, pens, ruler, scissors, crayons or colored pencils, glue, a roll of tape, 3 uniforms and school shoes.
Where: You will be donating to children in the communities of Chilamate, Rancho Chilamate, El Roble, El Progreso, La Esperanza, Loma Linda and Linda Vista.
When: School materials packages will be distributed to the students the last week of January, as the Costa Rican school year typically begins the second week of February. If you have a trip planned around that time, come meet some of the kids you are supporting and help us give the supplies out.
Why: In Costa Rica, budgets for public schools are limited and students must have all their own supplies to attend class. In addition, uniforms are mandatory and are often times hard for parents to afford, especially if there is more than one child in the family. Invest in rural school children, give them the confidence to be successful in their studies and show them that there are people in our global community who care about them earning a good education.
Cost: $100 per child
Bonus: Receive a photo and thank you letter from each child you support.
Donate Text Books
Who will benefit directly: High school students and their teachers.
What: Donate suggested novels and text books from the curriculum set by the Costa Rican Ministry of Education. Each of the twelve subjects offered in 6 grade levels are in need of new teacher’s editions text. You will purchase 3 copies of each text for a total of 36 new text books for one grade level. One copy will go to the high school in La Virgen, another to the high school in Puerto Viejo and another copy for the public library at the SCLC. Novels will be for the public library at the SCLC.
Where: High schools of La Virgen and Puerto Viejo, Sarapiquí, Costa Rica.
When: We have the list of novels and text books ready that are most in demand. As soon as we receive funding, we will immediately start purchasing the books to distribute to the teachers at the two high schools in our target communities, as well as add a copy of each text book and all novels for the SCLC library.
Why: Local high schools are underfunded and are in need of simple materials like text books for teacher’s use, which is a very important tool for creating new topics and lessons for daily classes. Schools also do not have enough money to provide each student with their own book to take home and study with. We would like to add text book copies and novels to our library at the SCLC, so high school students can continue to study outside of school hours in addition to providing teachers with new books for creating new lessons.
Cost: $450 to purchase 36 text books for one grade level.
$2,700. to purchase text for all 6 grade levels.
$500 to purchase 18 copies of each of the 3 required novels for one grade level.
$3,000 to purchase 18 copies of each of the required novels for all 6 grade levels.

Your donation will also go to the creation of a traveling book case. Your traveling book case will be filled with books and then brought to one of 9 local schools. Some of these schools are located along the Sarapiqui River, where the Floating Library visits the schools and distributes the books.

Donate Trees: Rally for Reforestation
Who will benefit directly: Rainforest flora and fauna
What: Plant native trees on land, which was originally primary rainforest but has been cleared for agricultural use. The cost includes the purchase of young trees and labor to plant them. Also included are organic composted soil, fertilizers and monitoring costs for one year.
Where: The buffer zone around the San Juan- La Selva Biological Corridor in Sarapiqui, Costa Rica.
When: There is a great need for reforestation, especially in this area. Visit the local farm on planting day during your visit to Costa Rica, watch your investment for a greener planet come alive right before your eyes!
Why: The San Juan- La Selva Biological Corridor is one of the most biologically diverse areas of the world. Right now, the rainforest where many animals live is fragmented and we need your help to create a way for them to pass between the different parts of the forest to create ideal mating situations and better access to food, which will ultimately help to prevent extinction.
Cost: $600 for 50 trees. Purchase as many as you wish, there is no limit!!!
Sidewalk Safety Project
Who will benefit directly: Elementary school children in grades 1 through 6 and all community members that commute via walking or biking in the area.
What: Construction and installation of sidewalk, cost includes all materials and labor necessary for the project.
Where: Between the Chilamate Elementary School and Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center in Sarapiquí, Costa Rica
Why: SCLC offers an After School Program, English classes, library resources and computer access for students from the local elementary school, which is only a quarter of a mile from the Center. The Center is very important, since no where else in the community are these resources available to students. The children walk between the Center and school, often times alone, on a very busy main road where dozens of tractor trailer trucks from various pineapple and banana plantations speed by, making it very dangerous for children walking back and forth. The completion of a sidewalk will enable children to walk safely between their school and the Center.
When: We are just waiting for a considerate donation to get the Sidewalk Safety Project underway. The project will take approximately one week to complete and would love to have you join us during your visit to Costa Rica for the dedication of the new sidewalk to the children of the Chilamate School.
Cost: $600 per 100 feet. Purchase up to 1200 feet of sidewalk to complete the project from start to finish for $7,000.
Support the After School Program

Where: The After School Program is held at the SCLC in Chilamate, Sarapiqui.
When: This extracurricular program is offered throughout the entire school year and two weeks during summer vacation. During your visit to Costa Rica, come observe or participate in an After School Program activity.
Why: Costa Rican school children only attend class for three hours each day due to the lack of classroom space, younger children attend the morning session and older children attend the afternoon session. Due to time and budget limitation, students only receive the standard classes, no music, no art, no physical education or field trips are offered. Your donation will go towards material costs and taking students on educational field trips.
